Why healthy and sustainable workplaces matter?

With staff salaries and benefits typically accounting for 90 percent of business operating costs are your employees one of the biggest business costs. By creating interiors where they can perform at their best, you get more in return for your investment.

Many studies point to the influence of the environment on the human psyche, and the associated motivation, productivity or creativity. Elements such as plenty of daylight, proper acoustics, greenery, workplace ergonomics or access to healthy food are repeatedly referred to by interior users as the most desirable.

Furthermore, 84% of the respondents wish to work for a company that has a robust, concrete mission and positive values, according to a new survey published recently by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

WELL, LEED or both?

WELL Building Standard® is the first building standard focused solely on health and well-being of building´s occupants. WELL integrates technical requirements for physical space in areas such as air, lighting and sound with a focus on health. Additionaly, the standard also deals with the behavior and optimization of human resources for wellness.

LEED certification is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED certified facility must meet specific standards to demonstrate that it has taken significant steps to reduce water, energy, and fuel consumption, reduce the amount of waste it generates, as well as other steps to help reduce environmental footprint.

There is a 20 to 30% overlap between LEED and WELL and they are designed to work harmoniously. In fact, WELL’s biophilic design elements that bring nature inside are similar to criteria for LEED Gold and Platinum buildings.

As is clear, WELL and LEED complement each other and can thus significantly contribute to a win-win-win situation for the facility owner or developer, the environment and people at the same time.
