Why sustainable buildings matter?

Cities and built environments use approximately 75% of generated energy and produce 60–70% of greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings account for approximately 40% of energy use and carbon emissions.

By using the principles of sustainable construction and operation of the building, these negative effects on the environment can be significantly reduced. Furthermore, link between high performance sustainable buildings and benefits for energy, environment, health and productivity has been proven, and a conceivable return on investment (ROI) on their construction has been noted as well.

Higher lease rates and selling or renting opportunities are almost always the result of certified green or sustainable buildings.

LEED, WELL or both?

LEED certification is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED certified facility must meet specific standards to demonstrate that it has taken significant steps to reduce water, energy, and fuel consumption, reduce the amount of waste it generates, as well as other steps to help reduce environmental footprint.

WELL Building Standard® is the first building standard focused solely on health and well-being of building´s occupants. WELL integrates technical requirements for physical space in areas such as air, lighting and sound with a focus on health. Additionaly, the standard also deals with the behavior and optimization of human resources for wellness.

There is a 20 to 30% overlap between LEED and WELL and they are designed to work harmoniously. In fact, WELL’s biophilic design elements that bring nature inside are similar to criteria for LEED Gold and Platinum buildings.

As is clear, WELL and LEED complement each other and can thus significantly contribute to a win-win-win situation for the facility owner or developer, the environment and people at the same time.
